On this page, I have gathered some great links and information for you... I am not an expert on writing poetry and do not claim to be one, but thought I would pass on some general information to you.

Tips on Writing Poetry

From surfing the web and posting at different poetry forums, it is a fact that everyone has their own opinions on "how to write a poem". When I write a poem, I do not follow "rules"... my poems are written from the heart (Mistake #1 some would say) and many could be considered a "diary entry" (Mistake #2 others would say)... but, there are some helpful suggestions (notice I didn't call them rules) that can be followed... use of imagery and alliteration can enhance your poems, while clichés and abstractions can really take away from them... I'm guilty of using clichés and abstractions in my writings I'm sure, but like I said, my writing comes from the heart and although I am striving to improve my writing, sometimes the heart takes over the pen! There are also many different styles of writing such as Haiku, Tanka, Sonnets, Prose, Rhyme and meter, etc.

Monometer: contains one metric foot
Dimeter: contains two metric feet
Trimeter: contains three metric feet
Tetrameter: contains four metric feet
Pentameter: contains five metric feet

Quatrain:

abac or abcb
aabb
abab
abba
aaba

Copyright

Here are some links that will provide you with information on copyright protection, when a copyright begins, how copyright applies to the internet, etc, and how to go about registering your work with the Library of Congress for a copyright: (This is the process I use to obtain copyrights for my work)

And, just in case you're wondering, all of this information has been provided to you through my own research and reading. I have never been published (by a real publisher in a magazine) and even though I do own a copy of Poet's Market, time and energy has prevented me from seriously preparing to submit any of my material for publication... some poets/writers strive for publication, I do not... I write for me, but maybe one day, I'll be able to devote the time and attention needed to begin submitting my poetry for publications but until then...

I wish you the best of luck in submitting your material for publication!! If your work is published, drop me a line as I would love to read it!
