I Held Your Hand

Cold sterile faces with no emotion
keep you comfortable
as the intrusive noise
deafens the silence.
In the stillness of the night
I held your hand,
as you took your last breath,
and watched you die

Flashbacks of my childhood and all
Daddy did for his little girl
filled my mind.
Feeling so helpless,
I held your hand,
as you took your last breath,
and watched you die

Although you could not speak
my heart could still hear
all you had to say
Seeing a tear run down your face
I held your hand,
as you took your last breath,
and watched you die

You lay there silent
unaware of the machines
breathing for you
trying to contain my guilt,
I held your hand,
as you took your last breath,
and watched you die.

Your suffering has ended
It is so very quiet as peace
is all around
Saying a prayer
I held your hand,
as you took your last breath,
and your heart whispered goodbye.
