Poetry Challenges:

Suffering from Writer's Block? Lost your muse... or just for fun... Here are some poetry challenges you can try to get that creativity flowing again!

Magnetic Poetry

A fun poetry game to try using a pre-chosen group of words... This is a lot harder than it looks. The topic I chose was New York and I decided to try my hand at a Haiku... it was fun seeing what I could put together:

Skyscrapers look down
at crowds of people rushing
manic New York style

Photographs

Photographs are a great way to help with Writer's Block. Choose a photo and write about what is happening in the photograph... the surroundings, what the people are doing, the season, etc. You can use one of your own personal photographs or find a picture that you like and use your imagination to create a story! Here is a photo I took from the Sears Tower... give it a try:

Emotions

Create a poem describing an emotion, without using the word to describe the emotion... for example, love, hate, anger, etc... see how descriptive you can be so that the reader will know which emotion your poem is about!

Words

Write a poem incorporating the following words into your piece:

Music, Breakfast, Frolic, Leather,
Mountain, Sleep, Traffic, Ribbon

Here's one that I wrote using those eight words:

Morning

The music from the radio echoes
down the hallway, mingling
with the smell of fresh coffee waiting
for me at the breakfast table.

Opening the window to breathe
the cool, crisp mountain air,
I watch natures' animals frolic
among the grass in playful delight.

Pop is in the stable saddling up
Hawkeye in his finest leather,
proudly showing the stable hands
the Blue Ribbon won at the County Fair.

As Billy heads out early to avoid the
morning traffic, I climb back into bed,
and drift off to sleep, listening to the
hummingbird's melody outside my window.

Dictionary Titles

Close your eyes, open up your dictionary and drop your finger randomly on a word. Write a poem about the word you chose!

Monthly Word Challenge: Ancient
Definition: Of times long past, very old.

Use a memory

Go back in time to one of your favorite memories... high school days, summer vacation as a child... write a poem about it... try to be specific so your readers can identify with you and possibly share in it as well!
